Kente is often known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns, each color holding specific meanings related to culture and spirituality. Adinkra textiles are stamped with symbols that convey messages. He recently had this shirt custom made at a local tailor. Sewing and tailoring are deeply ingrained in Ghanaian culture, with many people making their own clothes or having them custom-made. In the background a range of fabrics are seen in silks, cottons, and polyester with more popular western prints and traditional Ghanaian styles. She is utilizing a New Butterfly sewing machine, a popular sewing company in the country known for its durability and affordability. Wall of Batiks Founder of Zee Batiks showcases her incredible selection of hand-dye batik fabrics in a myriad of different colors at the Green Butterfly Market. Batik is a traditional textile art that involves a wax-resist dyeing technique to create intricate patterns and designs on fabric. Traditionally made with cotton or silk fabric, designs are drawn on using hot wax, and the fabric is later submerged in a dye bath to create the tie-dye effect shown here. Her fabrics are made with authentic and eco-friendly materials and have been used in a variety of traditional and modern fashion styles. Kente cloth is one of the most iconic and culturally significant textiles from Ghana, particularly among the Ashanti and Ewe people. It is renowned for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and deep symbolic meanings. Long pieces of kente cloth are interwoven on a loom, each pattern is carefully planned and often has specific meanings. The bright golds and greens pictured point to prosperity and life. Angeli’s Upcycled Bag Angeli is a woman of many hats. A designer, artist, writer, gardener, healer to name a few. She creates upcycled bags blending traditional Ghanaian fabrics often from the scrap fabrics of local seamstresses with old jeans and shorts. The bag pictured here features a strap made out of an old seatbelt, a batik lining, and a pair of overalls that have turned into the exterior of the bag. She utilizes a fishing line to crochet all of these elements together. A blend of new and old, she weaves sustainability practices into her artistic practice bringing a new life to otherwise unused and wasted materials. Most notably she is showcasing an earring designed by one of her students with various beads, seashells, and buttons that have been upcycled from several pieces that were going to be wasted. Second-hand Market The second-hand clothing market has become a significant part of Ghana’s economy. These clothes are imported in bulk, primarily from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western countries, and are sold in local markets across Ghana. The market for these clothes grew rapidly due to their affordability and the variety they offered. Today these mark the effects of a system deeply rooted in the dynamics of globalization, economic shifts, and cultural exchange.
